As a lifelong Chicagoan, my biggest memory is Carson Pirie Scott where it's all about the clothes and it's been about 2 years that all stores shut down, but found new life as an online store. Here's a commercial from 1984 where its slogan "Carson's Is For Me" became a hit slogan with 80s fashon.
It was one of those shops that really had something for everyone: plenty of modelling kits for my dad, plenty of sewing accessories for my mum, and plenty of toys for myself. I always enjoyed going in there to see whether the next LEGO set I wanted to buy was in stock - or, from about 2003 onwards, I enjoyed seeing what model trains they had.
Around 2005 or 2006, the store relocated, and dispensed with most of the non-modelling stuff. It just wasn't the same, though, and it closed down around 2007 or 2008. A new model shop was founded on the same site, and I do still go in there, but I would still love to have the old store back!
